UMG lost their minds

“The Universal Music Group demands that all providers of music downloads like Amazon and iTunes now watermark downloaded songs with identifying characteristics. The metadata of any purchased mp3 file will contain the first part of your e-mail address, date of purchase, album or song identification, in order to track whether the respective file has been modifyed. ”

I saw this while browsing the amazon.de site as the ultimate reason to only listen to free online streams from now on.

  1. Pingback: test blasts are fun

  2. this is a nonsense, metadata is easily removed or modified, so they wont be going after the serious pirates anyway, just the odd non technology aware person.
It is possible to record this information into the mp3 in a lossless manner, but would require recoding impacting the user experience
